HPS, Medicine, Majors, and You by Dr. Dan Menchik

We had a great meeting last Tuesday night. Thank you to all of you that came! We hope that you enjoyed the depth of the presentation and the pizza as much as we did!

A brief summary of the meeting for those who were interested but could not make it:

In this presentation (titled HPS, Medicine, Majors, and You) Dr. Menchik’s main approach was exploring and attempting to debunk some common assumptions related to college, jobs, and a chosen major. The first being that a degree or major directly correlates to a specific job or life post-college; the second was that you are completely in control of your fate; and the third, as he put it, “that you ever ‘get’ anywhere” when progressing through your education/life. To debunk these statements he presented some interesting concepts/data, used examples for his work & other well-known entrepreneurs (e.g. Steve Jobs), and talked about where Lyman Briggs HPS major factors in to all of this.

We were able to learn more about medical sociologyHPS as a chosen major, the job market, how HPS major in preparation for/ in the job market, important job skills, the importance of finding your passion/flow, and more.

We Interrupt Your Regularly Scheduled Programming For This Special News Bulletin:

This is not an official RSO but a informal collaboration between the HPSSA, the Lyman Briggs SAC, and whoever would like to attend. We plan to meet in the Holmes Hall Sparty’s on a Bi-weekly basis to discuss a ‘Topic of the Week’ chosen by a member who volunteers at the previous meeting. The inspiration for creating this collaboration we are calling ‘Journal Talks’ comes from the Briggs Diversity Workshop and MSU’s year long 60/50 Initiative.

The first meeting will be Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 at 10pm. The topics could be anything from ethnic diversity to medical discoveries, from political to sociological, scientific to philosophical,  MSU specific to worldwide issues, anything we agree upon goes. The volunteer for topic of the week may, if s/he chooses, also bring or suggest a paper/news article to read before hand.

At the first meeting we will expand upon the topics from the Lyman Briggs Diversity Workshop, get to know one another, and see where it takes us. We hope you join us on this magnificent new journey that possess amazing potential & opportunities!
